UC Admittance Rates for Every Public High School in California

I got a lot of feedback on my last post where I calculated the admittance rate for every school in Los Angeles Unified’s boundaries. The most common feedback I got was this: Could you calculate other schools outside the LAUSD boundaries?

Sure, why not.

Thanks to a few tips from readers, I was able to crosswalk all the data, and bring you (almost) every school in California’s UC Admittance Data. As a reminder, this number is the total number of students who were admitted to a UC school (as reported by the UC Office of the President) divided by the 12th grade enrollment (as reported by the California Department of Educatiuon)

But I took it a step further.

For the first time, I am going to try to present this data using Tableau, which you will see below. Tableau is a powerful data visualization tool that allows me to display all of the data visually and allows you to compare schools.

DIRECTIONS: To find your school, hover your mouse of the box that says “CDE name” and you’ll see a little magnifying glass. Using that, you can then search for your school. Make sure to uncheck “all” and then check the school you want to see.

You can also select counties so that you can compare within a county. To do this, uncheck “all” in counties and select the county you want to look at. The result will be only your county’s data.

The data is below. For those of you who are email subscribers (and I hope you choose to subscribe!), I am not sure it will work – so you can click here for a full window view.

Footnote:

I was unable to calculate the data for the following schools because of data irregularities:

  • The Miguel Contreras Learning Academies (all of them)
  • Creative and Performing Arts High School
  • San Diego High
  • Carson Creek High
  • Hamilton Union High
  • Washington Union High

  1. County view isn’t working for me. I’m using an iMac with OS 10.11.6.

What browser? I can’t really help you without browser information.

Any info available on UC graduation rates by high school? Might tell a different, and potentially more interesting, story.

I completely agree, that would be totally awesome. But unfortunately the graduation rates are not publicly available in the same way. But I bet the UC could publish that data if they were so persuaded…

Very nice. Is this based on the 2015-16 school year? I’d love to see the data for my school (Banning Academies of Creative and Innovative Sciences in LAUSD), but the class of 2017 will be our first graduating class. Where do you find the number for the numerator of your calculation?

    1. School Data Nerd says:

Hey there- This data is for the 15-16 school year. 16-17 data will be available next April (a year from now) The calculation is based on raw UCOP’s released admittance numbers found here – https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/admissions-source-school

  4. This is great data. Do you have the data for previous years for comparison. It would also be interesting to compare pre and post Common Core.
