This post is about something that everybody knows – but it is still interesting/depressing to look at. As I have noted before, Los Angeles is a place of de-facto segregation – but what does that segregation look like?
Below is a heat map that shows the populations of white students in LAUSD Schools. Red represents more white kids, green means less white kids (Note: I did not choose those colors, they are pre-chosen by google…so don’t get mad at me).

As we might expect, the white population in LAUSD is concentrated in the Valley and West LA. There are so few white kids in South LA and Huntington Park that we can almost read the map through the hi-lighting!
Compare this map to African Americans in LAUSD whose population is mostly concentrated in South LA, View park and Downtown :
Or Latinos who are most heavily concentrated in South Central, and the East Valley:
Asian students are most concentrated in the areas around K-town, Chinatown and the West Valley:
I think my favorite map, though, is Filipino students, because it is so specific – there are large Filipino communities in Carson and Northeast Los Angeles, and (news to me) in the North Valley.
